By offering Mendès celestial fall at Hugh Jackman’s Christmas party: “I was definitely a little drunk, Sam arrived late and I hadn’t seen him in years, hadn’t seen him since road to perdition. Sam sat down and we were having a drink together and it came to mind, it was just like one of those [moments]. We were [already] having conversations about directors…and it became glaringly obvious to me sitting across from him. I thought, ‘Of course.’ And so I just thought, ‘I’m probably not supposed to say this, but do you want to direct the next Bond movie?’

“And he just did this thing, kinda looked at me [and squinted] and said, ‘Yes.’ And then I went, ‘I’m screwed now.’ I’m sure there’s someone I need to talk to about this before I offer directing jobs. It’s not my responsibility, but I was drunk!

Talk to producer Barbara Broccoli about it: “I phoned Barbara the next moment thinking, ‘Oh my god, here we go, I’m going to be screwed now. I said, ‘I think I proposed to Sam Mendes the director’s job last night. [She said] “Incredible, awesome.”

When he floated the idea of killing Bond: “I was driving with Barbara [Broccoli] in the back of a limo away from the Berlin premiere of Casino Royale, and we were in a good mood because it was going well. In a way, the film succeeded. People were liking it and I was like, ‘Oh, I haven’t had enough time to talk to the producer.’ And I had this plan in mind. And I just said to him, ‘How many films do I have to do?’ Because I didn’t know because I never look at the contract. She said, ‘Four.’ I said ‘OK’ I said ‘Can I kill him at the end of the fourth, please?’ It wasn’t the fourth, but it’s the fifth. And she said, ‘Yes.’ She said yes.”

Why he wanted to do it: “And I had it there for a number of reasons. I wanted for several reasons. First, because I felt like it would be a good ending for me, personally, so I could move on. I could say, ‘OK, I can’t go back on this. That’s it.’ I was trying to protect my future in my head because I realized how life changing it was going to be when I was trying to take control and say, ‘OK, now I can go to a point and work until that point, then I’ll be good with that.
