No Time to Die Cary director and co-writer Joji Fukunaga spoke about how the characters, events and themes of Casino Royale influenced the new film.
No time to die director and co-writer Cary Joji Fukunaga explained how Casino Royale will influence the story told in the new Bond film. No time to die is Daniel Craig’s James Bond lap, making it his fifth and final film. Releasing on October 8, the film will follow an all-new villain leading Bond down a path that ties together the plot threads of his previous entries. The film also stars Rami Malek, Ana de Armas, Léa Seydoux, Lashana Lynch, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris and Jeffrey Wright.
Casino Royale, released in 2006, was the introduction to Daniel Craig’s Bond. He followed him on one of his first missions as he obtained his famous license to kill. Bond ended up in a game of high stakes poker in Montenegro against notorious villain Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen, who was not the first choice but gave the role the power it still holds today) and fell in love with his contact Vesper Lynd (Eva Green). As you can imagine, falling in love with a Bond girl didn’t go well for him, and he began to learn the lessons that made him the Bond he is today.

Talk with CNN, Cary Joji Fukunaga explained how Casino Royale was the key to developing Craig’s final exit story. He and his co-authors, including Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, used the 2006 intro to Craig’s modern iteration of Bond as “a kind of inspiration” for the “larger arches“seen through the latest 007 projects. Approaching the script, he became interested in how the characters, storylines and themes might”be brought back and see where it leaves us.“Read the full quote here:
I used Casino [Royale] like her first film as an inspiration – that’s where all those big arcs jump out from.
How do we conclude these? Which characters are we bringing back? What are the scenarios that have been presented over the films that have shaped and changed it? And how can these themes be brought back and see where it leaves us now as a sort of final farewell?
This approach to storytelling makes sense, given that Daniel Craig Bond’s films have been the most serialized in the franchise. The five Craig Bond films are much more related to each other than the other 007 images. Fall from the sky studied Bond’s past and Spectrum caused that past to crash into its present in the form of Christoph Waltz’s Blofeld, so it’s only natural that No time to die should draw a ring around the set.
It remains to be confirmed exactly what Casino Royale Easter eggs will be scattered everywhere No time to die. At this stage, anything is possible. Even deceased characters have the potential to reappear in flashback footage, given how Spectrum revealed that Blofeld was involved in shaping Bond’s path from the start. Die-hard fans might want to peruse the previous four Bond films with a fine-toothed comb to make sure they don’t miss a thing.
